Getting Around:
Getting around the West End of Donner Lake like a true local requires a good understanding of the terrain and weather, especially in the winter months. Here are some key points to help you navigate the area efficiently and safely:
Public Transit:
The TART (Tahoe Area Regional Transit) bus stop is conveniently located just 3/4 of a mile from the cabin, providing easy access to downtown Truckee and other nearby areas, including North Lake Tahoe. This is a great option if you prefer not to drive, especially during snowy conditions. You can hop on the TART bus and reach Donner Pass Road, Old Highway 40, and even connect to Interstate 80.
Driving in Winter:
If you're driving, a 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended during the winter months. The roads around Donner Lake can get steep, icy, and covered with heavy snow, making it challenging for 2-wheel drive vehicles. In fact, 2-wheel drive vehicles are not advisable in winter conditions here. Even with a 4x4 vehicle, it's crucial to have the correct chains with you, as snowstorms can come in quickly, and certain areas may require chains regardless of your vehicle type.
Lower clearance cars can easily get stuck or become high-centered in deep snow, especially after significant accumulations. Locals know the importance of having a vehicle that’s equipped to handle these conditions to avoid getting stranded. Always check the weather ahead of time, and prepare accordingly.
Access to Major Roads:
The cabin is conveniently located with access to Old Highway 40, Donner Pass Road, and Interstate 80, making it easy to reach ski resorts like Sugar Bowl and nearby towns like Truckee. During snowstorms, Old Highway 40 may close, but Interstate 80 is generally kept clear by Caltrans. Just be sure to plan your route in advance and check weather conditions before heading out.
With the right vehicle and preparation, getting around the West End of Donner Lake is a rewarding experience, offering quick access to outdoor activities and the stunning natural beauty of the Truckee area.
Other Things to Note:
located in one of Truckee’s most scenic and historic pockets, tucked near the West End of Donner Lake. Guests staying here enjoy quick access to Old Highway 40, a route known for its dramatic granite cliffs, sweeping mountain views, and iconic landmarks. This stretch of road leads past the historic railroad tunnels and offers vistas of Royal Gorge, Sugar Bowl, and the surrounding Sierra peaks—making it one of the most memorable drives in the region.
The West End of Donner Lake itself has a distinctly local feel, with quiet neighborhoods, forested backroads, and easy access to the water. West End Beach, a community favorite, is just minutes away and offers swimming, paddleboarding, picnicking, and a relaxed lakeside atmosphere. The area comes alive in summer, especially on July 4th, when fireworks and festivities transform the shoreline into one of the most energetic and beloved celebrations in the Truckee–Tahoe region.
Nearby attractions such as Soda Springs, Royal Gorge Cross Country, and Woodward Tahoe add to the appeal, offering a wide range of activities from snow play and skiing to mountain biking and indoor action sports.
This location offers a rare blend of serenity, natural beauty, and proximity to some of Tahoe’s most scenic and historic destinations—an ideal setting for guests looking to experience the authentic side of Truckee.

Summary: The house was nice. There were a few things that could use help. 1) Outdoor stairs feel unsafe. Right corner of deck/garage roof corner was hanging off2) Need more forks. There were 3 salad forks and 3 regular forks for 6 people. Lots of utensil washing with 3 meals a day3) Bathmat was missing from upstairs bathroom4) coffee maker didn't work. It leaked outside the coffee holder all over the counter and the keurig was hit or miss. There were some dirty dishes which I think earlier guests may have put away dirty so not much that can be done for that.
